One Second After by William R. ForstchenMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
To begin with, yes I was shocked to find myself reading a book that Speaker Newt Gingrich wrote the forward to.
Politics notwithstanding, this is a book that everyone from all of the myriad levels within our political structures realm must if not needs to read.
In short, it chronicles the life and times of a small community named Black Mountain, North Carolina, for a little over a year from the end of our society as we currently experience it. No, this is not a Science Fiction or Fantasy novel that deals with what happens to us the citizens of the US after a very plausible attack on the world via High/Low tech response to am EMT attack the major powers of the world. Not so much does this appeal to the son of a depression era farm kid as it shows how inter-dependent if not dependent on high tech to survive. Those of us on those nifty lifesaving medications would start going some right away some not so.
It asks the important questions of just what makes our society and the US great. How does the rule of law hold up when folks are too afraid or ornery to oblige them. What defines a community? All great questions when the book is looked at from the large picture. Are we prepared for a very easy attack such as this? Have you even heard of what an EMP is? I won't go into just how many tactical nukes have just up and vanished into thin air from areas in the former Soviet Union. You can find out those stats on your own.
I surely hope that we as a society are not hoisted on our own petard much as Rome was in its day.
Be well and live right,
mak :-)
